Botswana’s third President, Festus Gontebanye Mogae, was laid to rest at Phomolong Cemetery in a dignified State Funeral marked by full military honours. The burial ceremony, led by the Botswana Defence Force (BDF) reflected the nation’s deep respect for a leader remembered for his humility, wisdom, and dedicated service to the country.
The funeral procession from the University of Botswana Indoor Sports Centre was accompanied by military rituals including a 21-gun salute, a three-volley salute, and the emotional sounding of the Last Post, symbolising the end of President Mogae’s final duty and his peaceful rest. The Reveille followed, serving as a reminder for the living to continue serving the nation with honour and commitment.
In a touching moment, the folded Botswana flag that covered the coffin was handed to his widow, the former First Lady, Barbara Mogae, as a symbol of the nation’s gratitude.
