More than 36,000 Batswana are waiting for electricity connections as the Botswana Power Corporation grapples with a funding shortfall, BPC CEO David Kgoboko told Parliament on Thursday.
Appearing before the Parliamentary Standing Committee on Statutory Bodies and State Enterprises, Kgoboko said BPC has received 69,867 applications for power connections to date. Of those, 33,705 have been completed, leaving 36,162 pending.
The corporation has spent P1.044 billion on connections so far, but Kgoboko said available funds fall short of demand.
“The funds we have are not enough to cover all the applications that have been submitted,” he said.
The backlog highlights ongoing challenges in expanding access to electricity across the country amid budget constraints.
