Former President Festus Mogae of Botswana has died following a prolonged illness, closing a chapter on one of the country’s most distinguished statesmen.
Mogae served as Botswana’s third president from 1998 to 2008. His decade in office is remembered for fiscal discipline, democratic stability, and effective governance. Prior to the presidency, he was Vice President and Minister of Finance, playing a key role in shaping Botswana’s economic policy during pivotal years of growth.
Internationally, Mogae was lauded for his leadership in addressing the HIV/AIDS epidemic. His administration dramatically expanded access to antiretroviral therapy and reinforced public health systems, turning Botswana into a global example for HIV/AIDS response.
